The making of a Segmented Vase
The segmented vase starts as two or more different species of wood. In this instance the wood is Maple and Purple Heart.
Once the wood is selected it is cut to various various dimensions that are preplanned.
The vase that is being made in this instance is made up of 20 rings of varying thickness's of wood. There are 12 segments per ring in this vase (other than the 10th. and 11th. ring which is made of 22 segments). The strips of wood are cut at a 15 degree angles of varying lengths which are then glued together to form the rings.
Once the rings are made they are glued together to form a rough vase.
After the glue has dried over night the vase is mounted on the lathe and the vase is cut sanded and then a finish applied to bring out the color and grain pattern if any of the wood. With the following result.
This vase is mainly Maple with Purple Heart wood.
The finish is a Clear oil base with 6 coats of lacquer.
Size 11 by 6 1/2 inches.
There 401 pieces of wood in this vase.
